Gail Dufresne

Hooked and Designed by Gail Dufresne

Growing up surrounded by rugs made by her mother and sister, Gail Dufresne began making her own hand-hooked rugs in August 1984.

Since that time, Gail has received many accolades for her hooked art including being named the International Artist of the Year (2018) by the Hooked Rug Museum in Nova Scotia and as a featured teacher and artist at Sauder Village in 2004.

Gail's work has been featured in Hooked Desgined by Gail Dufresne numerous fiber art shows and contests, such as the annual juried Newtown Hooked Art Show. A number of her rugs have been selected for Rug Hooking Magazines annual "Celebrations" contest. With her work appearing in at least five of the Celebration editions, Gail earned a feature in the "Celebration Hall Of Fame," honoring the magazine's 30th anniversary. Her pieces have appeared on several covers of Rug Hooking Magazine, while her lively Lizards and Ladders design was also featured in the magazine Piecework.

A regular contributor to Rug Hooking Magazine, Gail has served on its editorial board for many years. She has published two books with Rug Hooking Magazine, Rug Hooking with Fancy Fibers (2016) and Geometric Hooked Rugs in 2010. In addition, Gail authored the dye section of Elizabeth Black's book, Hooked on the Wild Side (Rug Hooking Magazine, 2004).

As an energetic member of the Association of Traditional Hooking Artists (ATHA), Gail has served Hooked Designed by Gail Dufresne as president for ten years and currently serves as vice-president. In this capacity, she works with a great team to promote the art of rug hooking. She feels it is important to give back to the art form. Together with Cynthia Norwood, Gail co-wrote a Teach the Teachers course they have presented at various ATHA biennials.

A McGown certified teacher, Gail has been teaching at camps and private workshops around the United States and Canada since April 2000. She taught at the Reeth Rug Retreat in England in 2002 and will teach there again at the TIGHR Hooked Desgined by Gail Dufresne conference in the fall of 2018. She has taught specific classes for beginners, as well as classes on inch mats, sheep, sunflowers, sculpting, proddy, mixed media, optical illusions, dyeing, geometrics, and abstraction but, most often, teaches open classes where anything goes. These she finds to be the most "challenging and fun. They keep me hopping!" Gail will be teaching an open class during Hooker Hill 2019.
